Top Ten of 2024

With the Oscars tomorrow, I am posting my top ten list for 2024.

I thought 2024 was a bit of a down year for movies overall. I saw a lot of stuff, and so much of it didn’t resonate with me.

Here are some that did:

ANORA. Sean Baker’s empathy for sex workers reaches its natural conclusion. Available on Hulu on March 17.

THE BRUTALIST. Brady Corbet’s allegory about filmmaking and the relationship between artist and benefactor. Available on Apple TV, soon to be on Max.

CONCLAVE. Who knew a bunch of cardinals debating the selection of the next pope could be so thrilling? Available on Peacock.

DAUGHTERS. It’s easy to forget but important to remember that inmates are humans too. Available on Netflix.

FLOW. A black cat and other animal friends ride out the apocalypse. Available on Max.

HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS. Put silent films, internet skits, video game physics, and the tools of the Adobe Suite into a blender, and this is the silliness that you can get. Available on Amazon Prime.

INSIDE OUT 2. Riley has anxiety. Available on Disney+.

JUROR #2. This could be Clint’s final film. Available on Max.

NOSFERATU. Rarely does a film, due to cast, craft, and atmosphere, transport you so thoroughly to another time and place, horrific as it may be. Available on Peacock.

THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG. The personal is always political, but especially in repressive regimes. Available on Apple TV.

Still want to see: THE APPRENTICE, DAHOMEY, I’M STILL HERE, THE ORDER, SEPARATED, SING SING, MEGALOPOLIS.
